Rare 19th Century Memorabilia and Vintage Cards Shine in Robert Edward Auctions’ January Encore Event

The January Encore Auction at Robert Edward Auctions is a haven for collectors of vintage sports cards and memorabilia, with an impressive range of rare items dating back to the 19th century. This auction, running until January 21, features over 3,700 items spanning more than 180 years of sports history.

REA President Brian Dwyer expressed excitement about the auction’s inventory, which includes a remarkable array of signed items and iconic cards that cater to collectors of all types. Included in the highlights are signatures from legendary figures such as Lou Gehrig, Walter Johnson, and Honus Wagner. Notably, there is a unique 1888 N403 Yum Yum Tobacco John Clarkson Throwing card, graded PSA EX 5.

There are many other noteworthy items available, such as an 1883 signed scorecard by Harry Wright from a game between Philadelphia and Wright’s Providence Grays. Also up for auction is a 1938 Lou Gehrig-signed postcard, a 1924 Walter Johnson-signed album page, a 1939 Honus Wagner-signed Baseball Centennial First-Day Cover, and a Babe Ruth cut signature. Additionally, checks signed by baseball icons Jackie Robinson, Ty Cobb, and Roberto Clemente are featured.

Vintage cards are also among the treasures on offer, including a highly sought-after 1952 Topps #311 Mickey Mantle card, a 1914 E145 Cracker Jack Grover Alexander rookie card, a 1910-1911 M116 Sporting Life Honus Wagner card, several 1954 Topps #128 Hank Aaron rookie cards, and a 1957 Topps Football Johnny Unitas rookie card.

The collection also boasts hundreds of T206 cards, including rare finds such as the Ty Cobb Portrait Red Background and cards with rare Carolina Brights backs. Modern card highlights include a 1986 Topps Football Steve Young rookie card, as well as early Michael Jordan cards from 1984 and 1985.

The diverse and historically rich collection at the Robert Edward Auctions serves as a testament to the enduring appeal and value of vintage sports memorabilia and cards. Collectors and enthusiasts alike can explore and potentially acquire pieces that represent over a century’s worth of sporting history.
