Topps Launches Micah Johnson-Illustrated Negro Leagues Card Series

Topps, renowned for its iconic baseball cards, has broken new ground by teaming up with former MLB player turned artist, Micah Johnson, to introduce a groundbreaking series of baseball cards paying tribute to the Negro Leagues. This extraordinary collaboration has birthed the first-ever Topps Negro Leagues Baseball Card Set, a project that has filled Johnson with immense pride and passion.

The series commenced with the grand reveal of a Satchel Paige card in Kansas City, marking the beginning of the “Road to Rickwood” campaign. Leading up to the much-anticipated Rickwood Classic, a new card will be unveiled weekly, building up to a special MLB game at Rickwood Field on June 20, 2024. This event not only commemorates the oldest professional ballpark in the United States but also honors the former home of the Birmingham Black Barons in a poignant and historical manner.

To amplify the significance of this historic series, towering 24-foot tall replicas of each card will be exhibited at various MLB ballparks across the country. This act further underscores the importance of recognizing and celebrating the legacy of the Negro Leagues and the trailblazing players who graced its fields.

Micah Johnson, known for his transition from professional baseball to a celebrated artist with a mission to inspire and empower, brings a unique blend of artistry and reverence to the Topps series. His hand-drawn portraits of legendary Negro Leagues players capture the essence and historical significance of these baseball icons, showcasing a meticulous attention to detail and a deep-seated respect for their contributions to the sport.

In addition to the base cards featuring these remarkable illustrations, collectors will have the chance to uncover limited edition Numbered Parallel Cards with each print run. These exclusive parallels, including Silver Border (/99), Blue Border (/49), Purple Border (/25), Red Border (/10), Orange Border (/5), and Gold Border (/1), add a layer of rarity and desirability to the already coveted collector’s items, enhancing the thrill of the chase for passionate collectors.

The Topps Negro Leagues Baseball Card Set not only stands as a nod to the rich history and enduring legacy of the Negro Leagues but also presents fans and collectors with a unique opportunity to own a piece of art that encapsulates the essence of these baseball legends. With fresh releases scheduled every Thursday leading up to June 20, enthusiasts are eagerly awaiting each new addition to this monumental and historically significant series.
