Disney's Lorcana universe is back at it, giving fans a new set to chew on that's rich in intrigue and enigma—aptly named, Whispers in the Well. As the tenth release in the series, this set is stirring up a whirlwind of buzz, particularly with its themes of secrets and sleuthing. Scheduled to drop soon, this set is already sparking speculation, rumors, and eager anticipation amongst fans who crave that sweet mix of strategy and magic.

While Disney and Ravensburger seem to be playing their cards close to the chest—literally and metaphorically—there's still a wealth of information slipping through the cracks via previews and leaks. And what has emerged paints a vivid picture of mysteries bound to challenge players as they piece together puzzles, decipher page fragments, and perfect their deck strategies.

The release will be rolled out in a staggered manner worthy of any successful gaming franchise. Local Game Stores (LGS) are poised to get first dibs on Friday, November 7, setting the stage for a series of early events and exciting promotional opportunities. This gives LGS a full week of exclusive hype before major retailers and online platforms join the party on November 14. The phased release means a week of grassroots excitement and buzz, sure to fire up every dedicated Lorcana fan.

At the heart of this set, lies an intriguing new card type: the Whisper, which is essentially a partial Glimmer. Intrigue and imagination abound as players are tasked with assembling these Whisper fragments into a complete character. Picture parchment textures with worn, frayed edges that seem ripped straight from some ancient lorebook. So far, the unveiled Whispers include Ursula, Whisper of Vanessa, Gaston, Frightful Bully, Megara, Secret Keeper, and Simba, King in the Making.

The set also introduces a fresh ability called Boost, a mechanism that seems to occupy similar territory to Shift. With Whisper cards, the game prompts players to tuck a card beneath them, turning the simple action of guessing the next few cards into a strategic maneuver. Knowing the top card lets you make calculated moves, stashing lower-value draws to your advantage. However, eschewing foresight could mean losing critical assets.

Adding another layer to this tantalizing puzzle, the set shines a spotlight on new franchises stepping into the arena. The arrival of Gargoyles is sure to make waves, led by Demona, Scourge of the Wyvern Clan. This six Ink character carries a robust five Strength and six Willpower, creating a seismic shift by exerting every opposing character upon entry. Demona won’t be lacking in company, as the clan features intriguing personalities like Demona, Betrayer of the Clan, Coldstone, Reanimated Cyborg, Brooklyn, Second in Command, and the formidable Goliath in various roles.

The inclusion of The Black Cauldron franchise shakes up traditional deck-building with an exciting twist. Paying three Ink for the titular item lets players transfer a character from their discard pile under the cauldron, opening up new avenues for playing stored characters—a groundbreaking form of reanimation. Expect cards like The Horned King, in mighty variations like Heartless Devil, Wicked Ruler, and Triumphant Ghoul, alongside Hen Wen, Prophetic Pig, and others feeding into this innovative mechanic.

Moving on to size, the new set retains familiar scope: a 204-card base joined by 18 Enchanted, 18 Epic, and two Iconic cards, totaling 242. It’s reported that roughly 190 cards have emerged through previews. Amongst them, the Iconic duo Hades, Looking for a Deal, and Ariel, Ethereal Voice bring their own unique powers. Hades pressures opponents to bottom a character you both choose, or let you draw two cards, while Ariel fosters song play, granting card draws when she already cradles a card beneath her wings.

When it comes to storytelling, this set truly shines with an investigative twist. The tagline Light Your Path serves as both a challenge and an invitation, urging players to track whispers with keen eyes and a playful approach. The artwork itself elevates the experience, piquing curiosity with detective-themed moments. Judy Hopps seems positioned as a catalytic figure in the journey. Ultimately, The Well harbors secrets, and eager players, armed with new mechanics, will delight in the search for truth, nourishing their strategic appetites as they navigate this realm of mystery.
