Lelands Winter Classic Auction Highlights: Clemente and Williams Memorabilia Steal the Show

The Lelands 2024 Winter Classic Auction recently wrapped up with a dazzling display of iconic sports memorabilia, setting the stage for some truly standout sales that had collectors and sports enthusiasts buzzing with excitement.

One of the highlights of the auction was the sale of a 1960 game-worn Roberto Clemente jersey, which fetched an impressive $256,714. This vest-style road flannel, worn during a remarkable year for Clemente, received a stellar grade from SGC, underscoring its exceptional quality and pristine condition, making it a highly sought-after piece for collectors.

Not to be outdone, a Ted Williams jersey from his outstanding 1942 season commanded a price of $191,563. This unique jersey, given as a gift to a dedicated Fenway Park fan and altered for a better fit, stands as the sole known jersey from Williams’ 1942 campaign, making it a rare and valuable find for enthusiasts. Additionally, a Williams warm-up jacket from the 1940s also found a new owner, selling for $40,920, further adding to the allure of the auction.

A baseball autographed by legends Babe Ruth and Honus Wagner, a cherished family heirloom, attracted bids reaching $102,694. This pristine ball also bore the signatures of Al Simmons and George Earnshaw, adding to its historical significance and appeal. A 1920s photo signed by Ruth and Lou Gehrig commanded a price of $131,066, while a 1949 Jackie Robinson card with a PSA grade of 9 autograph sold for $85,772, showcasing the enduring popularity and value of vintage sports collectibles.

A true standout among the auction’s offerings was a 1997-98 Metal Universe Championship Precious Metal Gems Michael Jordan card. Graded 8 by PSA, this rare card ignited a heated bidding war and ultimately sold for an impressive $232,847, marking a milestone moment in the auction market for PMG Championship cards and drawing attention from serious collectors.

The auction also shone a spotlight on unopened sports memorabilia, featuring items such as a 1961 Fleer Baseball Greats box and a 1974 O-Pee-Chee Baseball box, alongside a 1991 Kentucky Derby owner’s trophy, which fetched $165,479, showcasing the diverse range of collectibles available to enthusiasts with different tastes and preferences.

Game-worn items were another focal point of the auction, with a Sidney Crosby rookie season jersey and memorabilia from sports stars like Lynn Swann, Brian Leetch, and Jerry Lucas attracting significant interest and commanding high bids, underscoring the enduring appeal and value of authentic game-worn gear from iconic athletes.
